Bacon Yule Log Dog Treats

Holidays and baking go hand in paw in our home. Irie and Tiki love homemade treats, created with their favorite flavors, and I love to make extra as gifts for other dogs as well. Through the years, Irie and Tiki have happily tested so many holiday dog treats, but we wanted to create a special treat recipe that would feature one of their top tastes: BACON!

Our Bacon Yule Log Dog Treats are super easy to make using just a handful of ingredients:

• 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour *
• 1 cup creamy peanut butter
• 1/2 cup water
• 1 tablespoon olive oil
• 2 eggs
• 6 strips uncooked bacon

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Using a sharp knife, slice each strip of bacon into three long strips. Set aside. (If you are using thin bacon, it helps to slightly freeze the bacon before slicing.)

In a large bowl, mix everything but the bacon, adjusting the amount of oil depending on the creaminess of your peanut butter. (My peanut butter was an organic no-stir creamy mix and so I added a second tablespoon of olive oil.) *If your dog has a sensitivity to wheat, you may substitute other flours. The texture of the treats may vary with other flours–but your dog won’t mind!

Mix the dough well; this is a thick, sticky dough. Lightly flour your baking surface then knead the dough. Break off small balls of dough and roll each of these into a log similar to a breadstick. Set aside.

When all the dough has been formed into logs, wrap each one with a thin strip of bacon you have pre-sliced.

Place the logs on a baking rack over a drip pan. The logs will not rise but don’t allow them to touch one another. Bacon grease will drip into the pan.

Bake for 30 minutes then allow the logs to cool completely before refrigerating. Give to your dog as a special treat (remember: treats should be no more than 10% of your dog’s daily diet.) Break treats into smaller bits for small dogs or to use as training treats.
